Travel Info Has anyone from america been to japan? if so what is it like there? Travel Tips Japan is wonderful and exciting. It is also extremely expensive in downtown Tokyo and in hotels and major restaurants. But you can eat at noodle shops and local sushi shops without breaking the bank. And there are MacDonalds everywhere . In fact, sometimes I could not find a sushi shop but I could always find MacDonalds . There are "business hotels" that are relatively cheap : basic amenities as well as boutique hotels. And there are boutique hotels -- small total number of rooms. You can travel all over Tokyo using the train and once you figure it out it is fun and before that an adventure. You can see the famous shrines and temple and be inspired --all for free. You can wander downtown Tokyo --Roppongi and Shinjaku -- and be entertained just by the experience. Get a good guide book like Lonely Planet to plan your travel. Tokyo (and Japan overall) is extremely safe and I always found the people polite and helpful. Younger people probably speak English and will be delighted to help you and practise their English at the same time. Japanese are somewhat inward looking and think they are different but it does not make them racists. They believe their culture and Western culture is vastly different which they are -- delightfully so. I would also recommend a few words in Japanese to break the ice. If you say "sumimasen" (excuse me ) before you start your question in Englsih, they will be delighted at your even trying. If you "arrigato" (thanks) or domo arrigato gozimus (thank you very much) for any service or favor, this will go a long way. My favorite place in Tokyo is Kichijoji which has one of the most beautiful parks and temples I have visited. Others yes and i am still here. it is ok but be prepared to be discriminated against. unless you are of japanese descent you will be discriminated against. its funny at first but gets old after awhile. The people are not racist they just don't know any better. Well actualy some of them are racist but most of them are just ignorant. Doscrimnations does have its advantages though, Business buy you drinks and young women want to bang you. Well not all of them but enough to keeep your little black book full. Beer is good, but really expensive, actually everything is epensive. Temples and shrines are cool I recommend the Kansai region Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Shiga, Wakayama and Hyogo. Osaka is very Urban kyoto and Nara are famous for their history and temples. Shiga has the largest lake in Japan. Is i Japanese terms quite rural but actually not that rural. But it is cheaper to live than other areas and has more traditional japanese culture. Hyogo is home of Kobe beef 'Kobe Bryants Name sake' and Himeji castle also know as the white heron castle quite beautiful. Although alot of things here piss me off it is basically because i have lived here for so long. If you are just going to stay for a year or so it is pretty cool. if you come give me a email I'll buy yah a $5 beer. I've been to Japan couple of times. I love it there I wish I could go back. It was expensive, their Mc Donalds burgers are too small. People are friendly but some people would probably avoid you if you try to speak to them in english but if you approach them with the word sumimasen (excuse me)or shitsurei shimasu they'll be happy to help you. Traffic is terrible, that's why a lot of them use jitensha (bicycle) even if they have a car. They're not familliar with tipping. I offered a tip to a taxi driver, he just looked at me like I was crazy. Their taxi cabs are clean and the doors open and closed automatically. If you're planning to go, i recommend TOKYO, NAGANO, and KARUIZAWA. EXPERIENCE |
