Any tips on visiting Disneyland with kids (4-7 years old)?

Travel Tips
My first advice is to make a short vacation of it and stay in the park if you can. We live in LA but stay in Disneyland for long and short vacations because it takes the pressure out of trip and we all have a lot more fun.

During the summer if it is hot and crowded we go back to the hotel (Disneyland Hotel or Grand Californian) and play in the pool or crash in the room (if the youngest or parent needs a nap). We then return to the park later for the fireworks(which is easier done at 9:30 when you know a hotel room and bed is close at hand). By stretching the trip into a few days we are not pressed to run from attraction to attraction.

If this is not possible then I suggest going off season (not when kids are out of school) and even better immediately after a holiday weekend (since travel peaks and then falls off a few days later). Also if you are local do not try and do it all in one day get a season pass and visit on multiple days.

If traveling, make sure to ask your travel agent about park and hotel packages that includes the unlimited fast pass option. This will allow you to have multiple fast passes (a reservation system that allows you to have a scheduled time to return to a ride and by pass the stand by line) at the same time as opposed to the normal system that prevents you from getting another fast pass until the your last one reaches its start time. Also the Disney Dinning reservation system allows you to book restaurants for dinner (book at least 4 hours ahead of time) and avoid waiting in line for dinner when you are tired. You can get info at the Hotel front desk or online and you need not be staying in the park to use the system.

If you are into pin trading or collecting (and even if you not) buy some Disney pins on ebay (in lots for no more then $2 to $3 per pin and make sure to get lanyard series or "real" Disney pins) that you can trade with cast members (employee at Disney Parks known as cast members must trade one for one with guests in the park) which the kids (look for special kid trade only lanyards on certain cast members) will really enjoy and is a cost effective remembrance of the trip.

We bring water and other drinks in spill proof cups into the park for the kids, as well as goldfish and other crackers (even though security checks they let stuff for the kids slide mostly as long as it is not excessive)

If you are at the hotel or on a package you might get early entry into the park but beware you must go to the correct gate and pass by the other guest waiting on Main Street and only parts of the park will be open (but almost always Fantasyland). Another great tip if staying at the hotel is that you can take the monorail into Tomorrow Land from the downtown Disney station missing the line at the front gate (if the monorail is running) or at anytime California adventure is open you can use the gate in the Grand Californian to walk into the park and avoid both the front gate and all the stores at the entrance. Make sure to hit Fantasy Land early before it gets crowded and the lines get long.

When the pace of Disneyland get to be to much head over to California Adventure where the change in pace is a welcome change when Disneyland gets to be to much.

If money is not an issue, I would chose to stay at the Grand Californian for a few reasons a) there are bunk beds in some rooms for the kids, b) it cuts down on the walking since it is the closest to both parks, c) in the summer if you get wet on a water ride or need a bathroom you can walk out of the California Adventure park right into the hotel.

Ultimately the big secret is to take it easy and have fun.

buy a big bottle of advil. you'll need it.
I do know that lines are bad with or without kids and that if you want to avoid them the best times are from the week after thanksgiving 'till the week before x-mas. If you do plan to go on those months keep in mind they are the coldest times around florida and if you wanna stay for the fireworks (a must see) after dark then bring sweaters and try to hit the water rides as early as you can
Go mid week and when there is lite rain. Also get fast pass and take 1-2 adult friends so you can go on rides other than Dumbo or it's a small world.
