I don't want to rent a car when I visit LA. How should get around town? |
Travel Info Does no one really walk in LA? Travel Tips Contrary to popular opinion, public transportation in Los Angeles is quite effective and heavily traveled. However, due to the sheer size of L.A., you are missing out on a lot of oppurtunities and side trips by not renting a car.The Metro Red Line(subway) goes from downtown, though Mid-Wilshire area, Hollywood, Universal City. The gold line from downtown will take you to Pasadena, although it is very slow and most of the time it is quicker just to drive the 10 miles on the I-110(Pasadena Freeway). Hundreds of bus routes can take you anywhere in LA county, even neighboring counties, but be prepared to spend two hours traveling a route that normally would take 30 minutes on the freeway. My advice, if you know how to drive, a car is your best bet. The freeways are pretty simple to figure out, and common sense will tell you to avoid rush hour. To answer your question, I drive every day from my office building on Wilshire in downtown literally two blocks to pick up my lunch. No one walks in L.A. If you plan to be confined to just one area, like the third street promenade in santa monica, it might work. You can also look into the Metro System--stops are limited, but you can get to places like Pasadena and Downtown pretty easily. Find a friend who is willing to drive you around... Public transportation is not so good in LA... You should really reconsider and get a car, it will help you immensely. |
