Travel Tips
A good central location would be around Santa Monica. Aside from going to the beach, there are numerous great walking trails in the area.

You can walk along the scenic bluffs along Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, or take the path that runs along the beach from Temescal Canyon down past Marina Del Rey even to LAX (never made it that far myself).

If you want something a bit more strenuous, there are plenty of great hiking and biking trails in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains. In particular, Malibu Creek State Park is very scenic and you can see where they filmed the television series M*A*S*H*. There are also numerous trails not too far off of Topanga canyon.
