The population of the Los Angeles metropolitan region has grown spectacularly since the 1880s, when the city was barely more than a minor cow town.

2005 California Department of Finance estimate shows the city's population at over 3.95 million, with the metropolitan area at over 17.5 million; many residents are speaking of the greater metropolitan area when they refer to the city, as it is informally considered to be one large place rather than the combination of several smaller ones.
