If I'm only going to see one Broadway musical while in NYC, what should I see? |
Travel Info I'll be visiting sometime this winter, and I haven't seen any of the currently running shows. Which ones do you recommend? Travel Tips I have not seen Spamalot though it is said to be absolutely unbelievably fantastic. If you can't get tickets to that or they are too expensive I would personally recommend The Producers. It is hilarious and with the movie coming out you will be able to tell all your friends "I saw the Producers on Broadway." My family is a little bit religious though and some of the homosexual themes bothered my grandparents so just a heads up on that. Tickets for that show can be bought for half price at the TKTS booth. If you are bringing your family I would recommend the Lion King though since there are several locations throughout the USA you can see that it might be near you and not as important that you see it in NY. If you are a fan of Wizard of the OZ, Wicked is supposed to be good though I would still recommend the Producers over that. I would also recommend Phantom of the Opera but once again that is touring and not as important to see on Broadway. Note: If you happen to end up at the TKTS booth for half price tickets and you can't see any of the afore mentioned, Avenue Q is supposed to be a funny, edgy, (adult) production. You do need to get to the TKTS booth several hours early to make sure you get tickets for the show you want and not all shows are available. But if not, then Rent is definitely a no brainer. www.ticketmaster.com www.fatlens.com You can sometimes get tickets at the theater at the time of the performance. Just go to the ticket window and ask. As far as what you should see, it always depends on your taste. Check the reviews in the times. Terry Teachout, critic for the Wall Street Journal has a blog where he posts his recommendations every Thursday. You can read him at: http://www.artsjournal.com/aboutlastnigh... I've seen Wicked, Spamalot, Avenue Q, and Putnam County, from his current list. Enjoyed them all. |
