Travel Info Visiting the Phillipines(Manila) in Feb., want to know where to go, what to do and what not to do? Travel Tips They basically covered everything but still, to help you more, here goes: Shopping - Foreigners get a kick out of shopping here since the items here are very cheap (after conversion). Check out the different malls: Greenbelt - A-C crowd, designer labels, known stores with international brands, a bit crowded at times especially at night, walking distance from the main Makati hotels. Glorietta - B-C crowd, very crowded, walking distance from the main Makati hotels. Powerplant - A-B crowd, designer labels, known stores with international brands, crowd size is manageable, but this is far from the main Makati hotels. You'll need to ride a cab. Megamall - B-C crowd, many people but since it's big it only gets VERY crowded every Sunday, stores are a mix of known brands and local brands. If you stay in an Ortigas hotel then you could walk to this (not very near though) but this is 15-30 minutes away from the Makati hotels. Shangri-La - A-B crowd, crowd size is manageable, most of the stores are of known brands. If you stay in an Ortigas hotel then you could walk to this (not very near though) but this is 15-30 minutes away from the Makati hotels. Eastwood City - Far from them all. A-B crowd, during the day there aren't a lot of people but it gets crowded there at night because of all the 'gimmick' places. You'll need a cab to go there. Other must-visits (non-malls) are Greenhills. Here you'll find different stalls where you can HAGGLE! Very cheap, but most of the items are fake (they won't deny this though). They actually have different kinds of fake levels (can you believe?!). There are triple A Louis Vuitton bags that go for P2,500 the triple B version of which goes for P800. There's a new place called Tiendesitas. This has everything from Antiques to clothes to pets. Prices are not 'bargain' prices but are okay. It tends to get hot there though because it's an open area. If you're adventurous then it would be great to visit 168 in Divisoria, but I will only recommend this if you can go with a local. Eating - The food here is GREAT! You have so many choices, from Filipino to Chinese to Japanese to Italian to Indian and what-have-you! Of course you have to try the famous adobo, lechon, and inihaw (grilled) food. The hotels have great buffets, which go for around P1,000 but check out the restaurants in Greenbelt also. Sightseeing - For sightseeing, you definitely have to go to Luneta, Roxas Boulevard (at around 5PM so you can see the sunset at Manila Bay) and Intramuros. You can also plan day trips to Laguna and Corregidor. Clubbing - Not that familiar (since I dont do this hehe) but Makati has a lot of bars and party places. Greenbelt is a good starting point. Good thing about February here is the weather is relatively normal. It won't be that hot yet. Enjoy your visit here if it pushes through! Others February is one of the cool months in Philippines. So it's not really nice to hit the beaches around that month. However, if you're only gonna stay in Manila, I suggest that you should enjoy and take advantage of the nightlife. As far as I know, the best night spots are Makati, Libis, and Malate (if there more posters, correct me if I'm wrong). Shopping is another activity that you would enjoy. Malls in Manila are a lot better than here in the U.S., a mall in Manila always has the following other than shops: food places, amusement areas, and movie theaters. If you like restaurant hopping, it's the best place to go. They've got American, Mediterrenean, Chinese, Japanese and of course Filipino. Let me know if there are restaurants that you prefer going and I'll happy to recommend. Another activity in Manila is playing golf, Manila boasts some of the best golf courses in Asia. Lastly, why not go to Tagaytay and take a view of Taal Volcano, which is about a 2 hour ride from Manila. The weather in Tagaytay is a little bit cooler than Manila and the scenery is awesome, there are golf courses also in Tagaytay. I grew up in Manila and been back for a vacation in 2004. My hat is off to LRANGELS for covering it quite well. I've been to metro-Manila several times, and, YEA!!! I loved those malls........ we're talking 5 stories and always, I mean ALWAYS, alive with people during business hours. Let me add that you might enjoy a visit to Subic Bay. Also, you might want to do a tour based on the National Hero Jose Rizal. Check out Villa Escudero (They have a website). Also, look into Splash Mountain, City of Springs, and Pagsanjan Garden Resort. In the Metro, you might enjoy dinner at Riverbanks (the name of the city). Also, you might enjoy Manila Bay. Do ride the jeepneys, some tricycles, and a few of the buses to experience some of the culture. I found filipino people to quite kind and gracious. Please become acquainted with all walks of life of filipinos. The country has been through a lot, and they are striving ever so diligently to build a healthy economy. 50% unemployment makes it rough for so many, but you will see so many doing so much to make the most of it. There are yahoo groups that you may wish to consult to help you become more acquainted with the "Land of Smiles." Try "Living and Retiring in the Philippines." Modified 1 year ago For shopping: you might want to go to Glorietta and green belt in Makati. or SM megamall and Edsa Shangrila Mall in Mandaluyong City..They have great dinning Places too. For Relaxation: Hit the beaches in Boracay or El Nido in Palawan. NightLife: Eastwood in Libis, Quezon City or Greenbelt Area in Makati. Historical: Intramuros. Manila is dubbed as the city of extremes(that applies to the pros and cons) and it is alive with diverse night life(club, r&b, party, name it), shopping is lifestyle here(try Greenbelt, Glorietta, Edsa Shangri-La)exciting yet relaxing because of the interior and exterion designs. Strips of restaurants and dining places sprung at the most happening locations. transportation is not a problem but traffic, tolerable enough, cheap too. food is ecclectic, you may choose from varieties of any country with homegrown delicasies to enjoy. whatever you choose to get hooked on, manila or the philippines has it in-store for you. if you need honest and true filipino hospitality, you can find it anywhere here. feel free to ask me, i'll be blessed to help! |
