Travel Info Im going to cracow soon any good places? Travel Tips There are a lot of places to visit in Krak贸w. You can't miss the Marian Cathedral in the city square with a gothic altar by Wit Stwosz. In the square there is also a very interesting building called Sukiennice where the National Museum (painting) is located on the top floor. On the ground floor there are many shops with gifts, cafes and galleries. The old castle of the kings of Poland - Wawel - on top of a hill next to the Vistula River (Wis艂a), withthe statue of the famous dragon nearby. It's worth spending a day, or at least a few hours there. You see the armoury, kings chambers, the crypt with kings burial places, the famous Zygmunt bell and what is left of the Polish crown jewels. There are numerous museums in Krak贸w - you should definitely go and see the Czartoryscy Museum where there are paintings by many European masters, like for example Leonardo Da Vinci, there is even a small Egyptian collection. There are places connected with Polish history, like houses of famous Polish painters (Jan Matejko) or writers. Also Krak贸w is known for its theatres, so check if you have time to watch a play - there even is a pantomime theatre. The main street Florianska is full of shops, cafes and they all have this unique flavour to them. If you have a day to spare go to Wieliczka - it's about 20 km from Krak贸w - and visit the famous salt mine turned into a museum. Have fun! there is a legend about a fire breathing dragon that lived in a lair under the Wawel palace. and you can go to the lair - its a cave literally under the palace. there is an iron sculpture of the dragon as you exit the lair and woohoo it breathes fire! ok its fun for photos ;) in the city square you will see the Marian Cathedral which has 2 uneven towers. they also have a legend. you have to look to the cathedral and have your back to the 'Sukiennice' (the trading halls in the centre). as you slowly walk backwards from the cathedral, looking at the towers, remember the story: 2 brothers were comissioned to build the cathedral. family pride is at stake. one brother was making more progress with the tower than the other. so as human nature has it, the slow brother gets jealous and wants to sabotage the fast brother's team. ultimately, the slow brother gets so envious that the other tower is getting built faster, he goes ahead and stabs his brother with a knife, the VERY knife that (if you have been walking backwards as i said) is now suspended ABOVE YOUR HEAD! aah! and he builds the higher tower in the end. ok,so this is all a kid's bed time story but the knife REALLY is hanging above one of the arches to the 'Sukiennice'. just for the tourists. the Marian Cathedral's higher tower has a bugle player playing a melody every hour on the hour (i think, or at least in midday). why? another legend, but this time true, in the 13th century a trumpeter was shot through the throat with an invading Tartar's arrow and his bugle call was cut short. nice memories to keep alive. theres so many tourists in Krakow that you can probably get by with English only. if you're there, check out Zakopane (south poland border) in the Tatra mountains and get a cable cart ride to the top with views over Slovakia. and see traditional wood log houses made by the mountain folks. there are absolutely no nails! just wood and thatch. There are a lot of good places to visit in Cracow.you should definitely see the Wawel castle. The Wieliczka its a huge salt mine its really cool. You should definitely go to town hall. You can actually see polish famous people there lol. Also the Botanical Gardens are great.Well every year when i see my home land i try to go to Cracow because its so beautiful. |
