My wife and I are young and are wondering if Portland, Oregon would be a fun city to relocate to for a while?

Travel Info
We are both from Texas and both plan on moving back to Austin, Texas eventually, but would just like to live in another city for a few years for fun and the experience.

Travel Tips
I think Portland would be a great place to come to from Austin. I have only spent a few days in Austin, so I'm not sure if I can compare, but here's a shot:

1. Austin has a monster-sized Whole Foods... Portland has a Whole Foods that is just around the corner from Powell's City of books, a monster-sized book store.

2. Austin is the live music capital of the world... Portland can't make that claim, but there's a ton of music venues, events and artists all around the town. I see Stephen Malkmus (formerly of the band Pavement) wandering around here all the time, so in my opinion, good music lives here, too.

3. People in Austin like to hang out at the lake... People in Portland like to hang out on Mt. Hood (year round skiing), the coast, the nearby mountains and rivers, plus it's not too far to get to Seattle, Vancouver or smaller cool towns like Ashland by car.

4. Austin is a blue bird in a red state... Portland is a big fat blue bird that crowds the little red hens out of the Oregon nest to make the entire state blue (okay... Eugene might help a little bit).

5. Austin is a town of young people... hey, Portland is, too.

6. Austin has Shiner Bock and Amy's Shiner Bock Ice Cream... Portland has more microbrews than I can possibly list. I haven't gone around looking for local microbrew ice cream, but I'm sure it exists somewhere.

Sure, we don't have Tex-Mex, or Mexican folk art boutiques on every corner. Okay, so we don't know how to barbeque brisket as nicely as y'all. Sure, the rain can get you down... but most of the times it's just a drizzle or a foreboding sky. Washington D.C. and New York City actually get more inches of rain per year than we do! You might miss the bats flying around eating all the bugs, but Portland doesn't have Texas-sized insect critters to begin with, so you're set. Hasta luego, battys.

I think Portland is a fabulous alternative for a couple years. Why not come out to visit? We're friendly, just ask and someone will show you around to their favorite spots. Source(s): I live in Portland.

Other Travel Tips
yes.
It certainly is! Portland is, in terms of average age, one of the youngest cities in the US. If you like the outdoors, there is PLENTY to do in the Ptld area and in all of Oregon. Hike in the hills - windsurf the Columbia Gorge - kayak the Willamette River - ride the excellent city bike paths - there are a million things to do. Plenty of museums, gardens, memorials, and other activities. There's a concert or two going on every weekend. You'll run out of time before you run out of things to do in Ptld.
(used to live in west-central Oregon)
Portland is great ... but remember, it rains a lot there. Housing prices have risen dramatically in the past 3 years and unemployment has been relatively high ... of course the no sales tax is always a plus!
