Would it be hard for an amature sailor in the 1850's to sail from portugal to the Madiera islands? |
Travel Info Assume the boat had only a compass and a sextant for navigation. No gps, no radio etc. Travel Tips Portuguese sailors did it in the 15th Century, during the "Discoveries" early stages, when they reached Madeira - not Madiera - for the first time. They were not amateurs though, and they went on doing it on their sail ships for a long time. However, I don't think that was ever easy and I guess it would still be not too easy for an amateur to do it today. It all depends on the weather, hence, the time of the year, and on how skilled that amateur was. Source(s): History! Other Travel Tips no it would not of been hard for them. because the Portuguese were some of the TOP navigators and sailors in the world |
