"Portella" or "Portela" can both be Portuguese family names. Literally, the meaning in English is "small door" or "small gate". However, "Portella" (with two "L's") is not very current these days.
It is also the name of many places / villages in Portugal. The most well know place is the "Aeroporto da Portela" (Portela Airport) which serves Lisbon. In fact, the airport is nowadays inside the city itself, in an area called "Portela de Sacav茅m". Source(s): I know... :)
