What is fun to do in San Juan, Puerto Rico? What shouldn't I do/eat/drink? |
Travel Info This is my first trip off the continent! I'm going to P.R. this fall, and I wanted to get suggestions from people who have been there on what I should look into/out for. Travel Tips You've got some good options. San Juan has 3 areas, Isla Verde, Condado and Old San Juan. Its pretty spread out so you'll need to take a cab in metween each district. Isla Verde has your big resorts with some nice restaurants, Condado is about the same, but its more like Miami with more residences and then Old San Juan is the city within the old fort area. Pick up a Lonely Planet and they'll have good descriptions. As far as stuff to do outside the city, you could drive through El Yunque (The only US rainforest) or head to the Bacardi Factory for a "tour" (more of a museum than a tour). Both are free, but you need to get there either by rental car or tour bus. Driving in PR is like the US. You can use your US Drivers license to go around legally. As far as eating/drinking. You could check out some cool restaurants, eat some mofongo as a side dish and partake of some food from a roadside vendor like empanadas or pasteles. There's casinos in San Juan, but make sure youre dressed for it. Theyre just like any casino in Vegas, but smaller. You've also got the Bioluminescent Bay off the East Coast. You go at night and when your paddle hits the water, the bacteria glow in the dark. Its fascinating. Have Fun. As there's lots to do in both, i suggest finding a pamphlet in any gift shop and take a look. My personal suggestion is Old San Juan. It's absolutely beautiful. There's lots of shopping, cool plazas to see, and also Fort El Morro. Definately worth it. Basically there's no food health risks, but their water isnt the best so try to go for bottled, although i lived there for 5 months and drank tap water and i'm just fine :) |
