I suppose it depends where in Moscow you wish to stay. I just got back from Russia where I stayed right next to the airport in Moscow at the Hotel Novotel.
It was a nice Hotel (was supposed to be 4 stars) - but the room was a little smaller than would be expected in the US - But still nice enough.
The elevator was room key secured. I felt perfectly safe there. Source(s): personal knowledge

Other Travel Tips
Balchug Kempinski is a good choice. Expensive though.
