go to coronado or downtown- great dining and shopping in downtown, with a kind of new york vibe

You HAVE to go to Old Town while you're there! It's fun and shows San Diego's old history (plus it's near the airport)! Some of it is being relocated/rennovated right now, though.
Seaport village is also a great place to shop!
Go to a mission while you're there, too. The first mission in California is located close to San Diego.
And, of course, the San Diego zoo is great.
If you like beaches, Carlsbad beach is fairly nearby and really good. There are usually not many rocks and it's fairly pleasant.

La Jolla is beautiful if you want to just sit and enjoy the scenery. There are tidepools and some nice grassy areas. The Zoo really is nice, too. but beware the Panda exhibit line! It might not be worth it.
