Shore excursion in during Alaska Cruise? |
Travel Info Someone can recommend me shore excursion during Alaska Cruise (2 adults,1 kid and 1 junior) I have been locking for and I dont know what are best? Also "$" means "$100" or "$10" when they show the excursion prices? Travel Tips At least for SE Alaska, where I lived for 20 years and have taken one cruise to, I recommend choosing an excursion when you get to port, instead of booking one onboard. You'll find the locals friendly, helpful, and eager to show off the features of their town. When in Juneau, catch the cheap blue bus to the glacier - the guides usually talk about the history and surrounding on the drive out, and the staff at the interpretive center will talk when you get there. Take some walking shoes and enjoy the many trails and paths available. If you're there when fish are spawning, ask for directions to the easy paths that walk you right past those fish! You'll have to ask the cruise company to better define their $-$$$ ratings. Source(s): http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/distric... Other Travel Tips It all depends what the cruise line has to offer, but most offer the same types of excursions. Your family is the same as mine (2 adults, 1 junior, 1 child). It all depends what your family likes, too. For example, my parents weren't into tiring activities such as hiking, so we didn't do anything like that. In Alaska, wildlife tours are GREAT for everyone. They are usually by boat and/or bus and you see so many different sights/animals. I've found that city bus tours can be kind of boring, although informative. If your family is physically fit, then you could try the hiking tours. Glacier tours by plane or helicopter aren't the best, it seems exciting but it can actually be dangerous (when I was in Juneau, two helicopters crashed/became stranded within hours of each other). It really all has to do with what your family likes and what you're interested in. Usually the ratings of prices go $, $$, and $$$. The cruise line should have the exact prices per person in their brochure for the excursions; if not, you should call and find out. Excursions can be pretty pricey, anywhere from $30 - $120 per person, sometimes more. Have fun! cruised/toured in Alaska 3 times Well, I flew Alaska for 13 years and have been there on 6 cruises, sooooo. In Juneau, I would suggest just taking a bus to Mendinhall Glacier, in town go to the Red Dog Saloon (that way you can say you've been there). Wait until you get to Ketchikan to buy any thing. This is usually the last stop for the ships and people have spent all their money in the other ports so they keep their prices low to entice you. You didn't say if cost is a concern, if it is when you get to Skagway about 3/4 of the way down the main street on the Right side is a stage show (about $15) which gives you a good history of the town, good show, pretty ladies too) if you can afford it ($100) the train trip up White Pass is great. A good museum is in town (Free) and gives you a lot of history of the gold rush and town, free movie, etc. Enjoy your trip and you don't need to spend a lot. I don't normally recommend the Helicopter tours, since this is verrry boring flying, they usually use very low time pilots to do this and accidents are not uncommon. Me Modified 1 year ago |
