What are the chances of Mt. Rainier erupting? |
Travel Info Don't mean to scare anybody up there, but I'm just curious... Travel Tips Slim to none...but there is a chance. Will it occur in any of our lifetimes? More than likely not. Mt. Rainier is currently dormant, meaning that it is not completely inactive and will erupt again. The Cascade Mountain Range is a relatively "fresh" mountain range (which is noted by the jagged shapes of the peaks) and is still growing, thanks to plate tectonics. As the phenomenon of plate tectonics occurs and continues to drive the Juan De Fuca Plate under the North American Plate, the forces necessary to cause an eruption will remain present (case in point: Mt. St. Helens). However, there has not been enough seismic activity around Mt. Rainier to warrant an impeding eruption. On an interesting (but terrifying) note: when Mt. Rainier does decide to erupt, odds are that the western face of the mountain (which is older and therefore weaker and more brittle) will be obliterated, turning into a massive mudslide which will travel down the Puyallup River and the associated valley and annihilate the cities in its path (Puyallup, Tacoma, etc.) as it makes its way to Commencement Bay and Puget Sound. Others probably zero 50/50 either it will or it wont. Paths of Destruction: The Hidden Threat at Mount Rainier http://www.geotimes.org/apr04/feature_mo... Mount St. Helens, the more active volcano, will erupt and big time way before Mt. Rainier will. |
