Do San Juan Islands *really* get 247 days of sunshine a year? Am dying to know. Link to weather site be great. |
Travel Info Am moving to Seattle and am intrigued by the oft-repeated statistic of "247 days of sunshine and half the rain of Seattle" used to promote the San Juan Islands. Since I'm moving up there from sunny CA, I'm dying to know. Someone please provide a link to a trusted resource (eg weather site) that proves it. Thanks! Travel Tips The data does seem to be supported, though sunny days and warm, sunny days are not equivalent. The islands are in a bit of a rain shadow because the Olympic Mountains catch the weather systems. The islands aren't that easy to get to though from Seattle, so I would use those as day-trip destinations or for long weekends. The ferry lines on Friday nights can get horrendous. Source(s): http://www.guidetosanjuans.com/... http://newweb.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecas... http://www.sanjuanweb.com/ Other Travel Tips The San Juan Islands DO get HALF of the rain (per year, in inches) that Seattle does!!!! Keep in mind that they still get plenty of rain- just not as much as Seattle. You can go to the weather channel website and it will tell you average rainfall for specific areas if you want to look it up, but trust me- I've lived in the San Juan Islands most of my life, and that's one of the facts that everyone knows here! Think twice (or 3 times!) before moving to the San Juan Islands, though- it is a paradise, but the cost of living is outrageous and jobs are scarce! I suppose that's part of the cost of our beautiful weather! I live on Orcas Island, one of the San Juan Islands. |
