What streets or avenues divide seattle Wa. in North, south, and east and west ?

Travel Info
street addresses are given using these terms as in other cities; In N.y.c. Fifth Av divides the citys' east and west sides.

Travel Tips
Seattle has several main dividing points. It is a long, narrow city built on 7 hills. The I-5 freeway runs north/south and divides Seattle with about 2/3 on the west side of the freeway and 1/3 on the east. Most of the hills are on the eastern portion. The Lake Washington ship canal runs east/west from Lake Washington to Lake Union and then out to Elliot Bay which opens up into Puget Sound. The canal is north of downtown, but since there is urban sprawl to both the north and south of downtown, it is about a halfway point.

Seattle is more often described by its districts: Queen Anne, Ballard, Magnolia, Universty, Lake City, Wallingford, Fremont. Greenlake, First Hill, Capital Hill, Downtown, West Seattle (separated from the rest of the city by the Duwamish River), Rainier Valley, Columbia City, Madrona, Seward Park, Wedgewood, etc.

Other Travel Tips
Downtown Seattle is sandwiched from the East and West between I-5 and Highway 99 (Locally known as Aurora Avenue).

As a modern planned city, Seattle's downtown streets running north/south are on a numbered grid system. They run parallel to Hwy 99 and I-5, starting with 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, 3rd Avenue, etc. from the waterfront going west.

However, running east/west, Seattle's street names are easily remember by locals with sayings such as "Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Pressure" - which notes the first letter of the the streets from "SoDo" (South Downtown where SafeCo and Qwest Fields are) to Belltown (North Downtown where the Space Needle and the Seattle Center are).

That is to say, starting from Sodo the streets are Jefferson & James (Jesus), Cherry & Columbia (Christ), Madison & Marion (Made), Spring & Seneca (Seattle), University and Union (Under), and Pike & Pine (Pressure).
