Is August a good time to see whales in the Seattle area? Can you recommend a tour company? |
Travel Info Any tips on the complete whale experience? I'd love to see a whale breaching and maybe hear a humpback whale's song. Travel Tips Well, you would want to travel North of Seattle to the San Juan Islands. The San Juan Islands are one of the premier whale-watching locations in the world. The first park in the United States dedicated to orca whale watching was created here. Besides the often-sighted orca, there are several other species of whales found in these waters. The minke whale, gray whale, Dall's porpoise, and harbor porpoise are the additional four species most frequently seen. Check out this site for a good company: http://www.sea-quest-kayak.com/sea-kayak... San Juan Islands are a beautiful destination. You can bike, hike, check out light houses and just enjoy the beauty of nature. If you are driving from Seattle and taking the ferry, take an early boat as the ferries can be crowded on week ends and in the summer months. Have fun. Others an hour north go to Anacortes,wa. its off hiway 20. you cant miss the exit going north on I-5. On commerical avenue next to walgreens is a whale watching company that takes boats out during the spring. i forgot the name of the company but u can do a web search. its pretty popular with tourists :) You won't see a humpback in Puget Sound. There are whale watch companies in Anacortes, Bellingham, Friday Harbor, and Victoria BC that will show you orcas. It's rare to see a whale breach though, I have boated these waters for over 20 years and I have only seen it once. |
