Do I really need to have permission to travel with daughter over border if father is not in picture? |
Travel Info the situation is I am a single mother, who would like in the future to travel with my daughter to the USA to visit my fiance. Apparently I need a letter of permission to travel. Do I really need it.. The father is not on the birth certificate and is not in our lives hasnt been since I found out i was pregnant.. Now I have called a local airlines a while ago and the representative asked me if the fathers name was on the birth certificate. it isnt and she said that all I would need is a birth certificate and other identification to travel that it wouldnt be a problem.. Travel Tips I believe since he isn't on the birth certificate you don't need anything. If you have full custody of the child, I know you don't need anything. But, if the airline has told you that you don't need anything, that should be all you need to know. Others Check the laws in your state, as far as i know as long as you have birth certificate showing she is your child you can fly any where with her.and of course proper id for yourself ..call a travel agent, they are there to help you and get the things you need.. if the father is NOT on the birht cert and it is blank as you say then you shouldnt need anything. yes you do. Airlines will not let you travel over international borders without an notarized letter, or some other legal documentation. I take it you going from Canada to the US right??? If you're a single parent and the father has never been part of your lives then you shouldn't need anything but your child's ID. I would though just to be safe get a lawyer, and get a sole custody court order (legal aid can help if you apply) and keep it with you when you go over. Better be safe in these times than sorry, things at airports are getting pretty weird. Heard a story of a woman who was detained going from California to New York cause she wouldn't let the airport security woman feel her up. I guess sexual assault in the name of security is OK. You shouldn't, but i don't know much a/b border crossing. The easiest thing to do would be to write a letter. I'll write something as an example, or if you like, print it out and use it! (put date here) To whom it may concern: I, _________________, have sole custody of my daughter,______________. Her father relinquished any right he may have had as a parent upon refusal to sign her birth certificate. That being so, I do not need his permission or approval for anything that pertains to my daughter. (print name) (sign name) -then just take it someplace where you can get it notarized, and bring the birth certificate as proof. I think that should work, b/c it says that you obviously DON'T need his permission! |
