Travel Info How often is seattle hit by an earthquake, how powerfull is it usually? Travel Tips Actually, Washington gets earthquakes all the time. However, they are usually so small that you can't even feel them. I've lived here my whole life (26 years) and have only actually felt 2 or 3 (the last big one and the biggest one I've ever felt was about four years ago...that one was something like a 6 or so. Fairly big.) Don't worry, though. It's actually really rare. Not like the storms in the south or natural disasters you might get in other places. A friend of mine was freaked out about volcanoes when she first moved from New Jersey. However, there hasn't been a volcanic eruption since I was born in 1980. It's really pretty safe here as far as natural disasters. Others Hasn't been hit in a long time. Usually very small or gigantic. But where can you go where this isn't true? i have no idea sorry! but i would like to find out. They have small earthquakes (that you cant really feel) all the time, and occasionally medium ones that you can feel. I lived there most of my life and only felt 2. They've been saying for years that the area is overdue for "the big one" Almost never a big one. We've had one big one but its been like 5 or so years. Chances are you will probably not even notice an earthquake unless its a 3.5 or higher. If you find yourself somehow in an earthquake just stand under a table or in the doorway you'll be fine (i hope). It probably wont even happen Pretty often, actually, but as everyone else has said, usually they're too small to even feel. I was in Spokane during the last major one Seattle had and we felt it even there, so it was pretty big. But, I've been here for 16 years and haven't felt anywhere near the number or the magnitude that I took for granted for the 10 years I spent in L.A. Like the potential for a volcanic eruption, earthquakes are scary mainly because they are so unpredictable. We could go another 10 years easily without having one of note, but it could happen five minutes from now just as easily. the last major earthquake was in 2001...and if i remember correctly it was between 6 and 7. i think most of the damage actually happened in oly as the epicenter was just outside of olympia. before that i remember a couple of small earthquakes, but it's nothing like some of the quakes that they have in cali. |
