I've lived in Spokane for 17 years. Moved from Chicago suburbs and it was quite a change. Much slower pace of life here. Very conservative, military and small-minded town. We were snubbed by neighbors for 5 years because we moved here from another state. They don't like "outsiders" especially from California, where they think the devil lives, or something. Lots of Mormans. The city itself is small enough to get from one end to the other in about 20 minutes, unless you're going out to the Valley- that's east of town and really spread out. The cost of living used to be lower here to make up for the pathetic wages, but lately, the cost of everything has skyrocketed. Housing is incredibly expensive now compared to when we moved here. We, of course, had our little scandal with the mayor, and I'm surprised that nobody answered yet that that's what they've heard about Spokane. That and our serial killer (Robert Yates- he killed prostitutes for years) Anyway, it's a small city wanting to be a small town, but it's too late for that now and it seems like it just doesn't want to grow up and face the issues that confront it- like crime, gangs, a city council that never seems to get anything constructive done, homeless people, the working poor, dropouts, you name it. We've got it all- Next to Nature- Next to Perfect. (our motto)

I've heard that it doesn't rain there as much as it does in Seattle, although Spokane does get dreary in the winter. (A former colleague hailed from Spokane, and I have an open invitation to visit whenever I want.)
That is SUCKS and there isn't much going on there! Of course Gonzaga is in Spokane and that's about all that city has going for it. I'd stick with western WA, much better! Eastern WA is flat and is just farm land. If you want excitement stay in Western WA!
