Travel Tips
I recommend just north of Seattle in the Greenlake area or even further north in the Shoreline area.
You can easily go to Woodland Park and the city Zoo, Greenlake for running, biking or blading, Space needle or go to a sporting event.
Prices there are cheaper due to the older homes in the area. Greenlake has several restaurants and bars that are for the under 30's crowd and Shoreline is more residential with family residents. Also check Snohomish county which has Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace for more affordable homes, definitely cheaper than King County (where Seattle is in).

Others
Seattle is very expensive, if you haven't checked into housing yet, you are in for a surprise. The market is still strong and prices are not leveling off.
You should live across the water from Seattle, not in it, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, or Bremerton, somewhere in that area, because all of those (especially Poulsbo) have a nice small, coastal town feel, there's cheaper housing, and you have Seattle right next to you (except your separated by water so there's no big city crime or crowdedness)

some things to do there are Mt. Rainer, Pt. Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, the Space Needle, whale watching, the coast, boating, the ferry boats, and Seattle Aquarium

but one important thing would be to live across from Seattle, not in it
lived there for 7 years
I'm born and raised, still live in Seattle. For my money, West Seattle is a great area. Alki Beach, Lincoln Park, the Longfellow Creek trails, Westcrest Park (great if you have a dog or ride horses) all are lovely park/recreation areas. The views of the city and Puget Sound are unmatched, and it has really good bus service to downtown. Also ferry service to some of the islands. Some zip codes are 98106, 98126, 98136, 98116. Housing ranges from very spendy to fairly affordable, depending on the area of West Seattle you are in. Be aware, if you look at a map, the areas close to Delridge Avenue, anywhere south of the West Seattle Golf course, are still a bit rough. The homes are being bought out by middle class folk, and the neighborhoods are much nicer than they used to be, but still have their not-so nice areas. Good luck ,and welcome to Seattle!
well 98501 is a great area.... ;-) but it's an hour from Seattle
First, don't try living in or near downtown Seattle. It's just awfully pricey and kind of crowded.

Check out the website link for parks below, as well as a link of "things to do" in Seattle.
