Questions about moving to Redmond, WA (Seattle).? |
Travel Info I'm looking at moving to Redmond, WA in early 2007. I'll be bringing with me $20,000, and my car to start. My main questions are as followed: 1) Do I need to use my car to travel into Seattle or can I use publich transportation? I hate driving highways and within busy cities (like LA). I perfer to use my car locally (in Redmond) and use bus system to get into and around the Seattle. Seattle seems to be only minutes away from Redmond. 2) Job market half way decent in the Redmond/Seattle area for clerical specialists? 3) Cost of living. Is cost of living high within Redmond/Seattle? I live in S. Calfornia and a studio apartment where I am goes for $1,500-2,000. I'm looking for something around $700. 4) How close are other towns/cities? Where I am now it takes forty minutes by car just to get into the city. 5) Weather. I'm tired of this desert hot weather. I'm looking for wet and cold weather. Rain, snow, ect. All the good weather I remmeber from living back east :-) Travel Tips And now reality. With the money you are bringing, $20,000! will not last you very long in Redmond. If you want a nice place in a nice area, you will not find it for around $700. 1) The transportation is not the greatest, but considering the gas prices, the bus system is much better than emptying your wallet in the pump. There are several 'park and ride' places, where you can park you car, and take the bus to Seattle, it is much better than driving to Seattle. Seattle is not as busy as LA, and you will find people are much more friendly than LA, off and on the road. But, if you like to drive it is about 20 minute minutes, give or take, yet you have to get use to the streets. 2) The job market is not bad, but by 2007 who knows! 3)Apartments on average $850 and up. 4)towns are close together, Woodinville, Bellevue, etc. Very nice you will love it. 5)the weather. A lot of overcast. Redmond this summer is mostly cool, we didn't get a lot of rain, and we don't as so many believes. If you driving down to seattle, don't expect to see Bill Gates house. it is not easy to see, but you can see his beach. He brings in truck loads of sands for his beach area, other than that you will not see anything but the trees. lots of them. Redmond is beautiful, always green, people are great, very helpful and polite, if you are driving, people tend to let you pass them, Redmond is expensive, yet there are other areas such close to seattle that will not cost you an arm and a leg to live. The homes are high priced, and so are the restaurnats and shopping centers, with that higher tax rates. Good luck. Others Starting from the top here. I live in Las Vegas, NV but am born and raised around Redmond, WA (A little town called Monroe, which is 15 to 20 minutes from Redmond.) 1) I know there is Public Transportation from Redmond to Seattle. To be honest, it's quicker to go to Seattle in a car, it's about 20 minutes if even that. You'll cross the 522 bridge, which goes over Lake Washington (if your coming across that bridge going back to Redmond from Seattle you will see Bill Gates house on the Redmond side of Lake Washington in an area called Medina). 2) Honestly, I'd say stay in Redmond if your getting a job. They tend to pay better than in Seattle just because of the fact that people in Redmond/Bellevue tend to have/make more money per year on average. 3) Cost of living is not bad at all when your comparing that to Los Angeles. You'll probably be looking at $800-$900 per month for a nice place but I know you can find a studio for around $700. 4) Redmond/Bellevue are pretty much the same city now, they have grown a lot and merged together. There's also Kirkland which is just down the freeway from Redmond/Bellevue on I-405. I'd honestly say to stay around that area, if not check out Seattle. The living in Seattle is amazing, just with the whole Culture and all. It's beautiful. 5) Weather.... well if you want wet and cold lol you've looked into the right place, that's for sure. It doesn't snow all that much, just rain lol! I went back for Christmas last year and really to be honest, it's almost depressing sometimes if you've lived in it that long. I personally enjoy the cooler weather, considering I'm living in 115 degrees currently. Anyways, I hope this helps and you enjoy your stay up in Washington. It's truely a beautiful place. If your a person that likes hiking or seeing the wonders of nature, go check out the Olympic Peninsula and see the rainforest there. There are gigantic trees, you'll see what I mean. 2) 1 - Public transit isn't the greatest in the Seattle area, but it's workable. Not a problem to get into downtown via bus. 2 - Job market very good right now. 3 - Cost of living cheap compared to L.A. You can do pretty well for $700 and a 1 bedroom. 4 - It depends on the time of day how long it takes to get from one place to another. Rush hour is pretty brutal; other times not too bad. 5 - You'll find the weather absolutely glorious. My younger sister moved from the Phoenix area to Washington a few years ago, and she hasn't regretted it for one minute from a weather standpoint. Rain is frequent, snow maybe once or twice a year, but a quick drive to snow in the winter. Just out of curiosity, why have you chosen Redmond? There are a lot of other suburbs that are quite attractive, possibly somewhat cheaper & easier to get to than Redmond. You can use the bus, but may have to transfer a few times to get where you want to go. Maybe not in Redmond, but the jobs are good in the Seattle area, and there are other cities like Bellevue, Kirkland, Everett, and south of Seattle. Redmond in my view is a costly area to live compared to the area. East of Lake Washington always cost more due to Microsoft and all that. I personally like the Green Lake, Fremont area. Redmond and that whole area seems to blend together. Your only about 20 minutes from Seattle depending on traffic. The weather is GREAT..wet and fresh and green....you will love it...I hope I was able to help |
