My fiance and I are thinking about the San Juan Islands in WA for our honeymoon. Has anyone been there?

If you have, what do you think the best island is? So far Orcas Island is looking the best.

Travel Tips
Nope! No one's ever been there... just kidding. What a great choice for any reason. I spent the good part of one summer hanging out on Lopez and San Juan I.

There a lots of tasty restaurants on all the islands with a wealth of local seafood and usually organic vegetables. The beautiful vistas are available from all the islands but there are distinct advantages to each. Fortunately you can hop a ferry to visit the others, so why limit yourself.

Lopez I. is flat, so if you want to ride a bike, that's your place. Try looking up the Lopez Islander. And the locals ARE friendly.

If you like looking out over the rest of the world, hike Mt. Constitution on Orcas I., the highest point in the islands. There are plenty of accomodations in Eastsound from small B&Bs all the up to world-class Rosario Resort and Spa.

On the "main" island - San Juan I. - you will find plenty of activities. And you can choose which end of the island to stay on. If you want to be a "townie", stay at the Friday Harbor area. If you want to rub elbows with world-traveling yacht types, stay out at Roche Harbor Resort. You don't have to be part of the marina crowd to stay at Roche as the quaint Hotel de Haro, cottages and condos are located there in a historic 1880's lime and cement community.

Summer is a great time to just hang out in either center of SJI, just relaxing and people watching. There is plenty of hiking, whale watching, kayaking and just good old-fashioned sightseeing on the island.

The state tourism board has a good website for general info:

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

yeah, it's a gorgeous place to visit. I had a chance to visit Roche Harbor on San Juan islands and go sea kayaking. Had a ball! the scenery is gorgeous with rolling white peaked mountains.

It sort of reminds you of "The Shire" in Lord of the Rings where the hobbits live.. very earthy, green and rustic. Very clean and safe. Lots of little bed and breakfast lodges and eateries. I highly recommend visiting, also consider taking a puddle jumper plane to different islands.. very unique experience!

I was a camp counselor there for 4 years and visit there as much as I can. I live in the Seattle Area, and when people ask me where I want to retire, my answer is always the same, the San Juan Islands. Congrats on a fine choice.

With that said, Orcas Island is awesome and has a beautiful hike up the mountain or you can drive it. Rosario is there if you don't mind the price.

My honeymoon will be on Lopez. The smaller but friendlier one of them all. Everyone waves at you. I thought my bumper was falling off until the guy at the grocer explained that is how it is on this Island.

B&B's, so many to choose from. The good thing is, you can take a ferry and island hop and find one that suits you both.

Congrats on the engagement, and enjoy one of the worlds best kept hide aways. Hope you like the eagles and orca's.
