I went on a hike yesterday and hiked deep in the mountains, and found a old gold mine, anyway, I found..? |
Travel Info .. something that kinhda looked like gold, and I am not sure where to go to find that out, I think I found some dimonds also. Any suggestions? Travel Tips The gold in most gold mines is usually microscopic and mixed in with the other rocks (the ore). You usually can't see anything with the naked eye. Large visible pieces of gold that you could see and pick out of the rock is very rare and the miners would not likely have left something like that behind. In gold mining areas, you can sometimes find small amounts of gold in the creek beds by panning, but it is unlikely that you would just find a piece if you did not have the right equipment and know how to use it. Many mines that were rich in sulphides have iron pyrite which looks sort of like gold (it is yellow and metallic). The most sure fire test for gold, is to put a little piece on a hard surface and hit it with a hammer. Gold is very soft (like lead) and will flatten when struck. If it is iron pyrite, it will just crumble into smaller pieces and dust. Assayers will tell you how much of certain materials are in a sample of rock ore, but they will charge you for it. People generally use an assayer when they know they have found a valuable mineral and just want to know what sort of percentage the ore contains. If you just want to know what a certain type of rock is, I would recommend taking a piece or two to the geology department at the nearest university and have someone there take a quick look for free.
