Travel Info Why does it take longer to fly back to Asia from the US than it does to fly to the US? Travel Tips Flying against the direction of the jetstream takes more effort than flying with it, and so planes travel faster when flying with the current of the jetstream. Others When you are in an airliner you are flying in the Jet Stream which is moving generally East (towards the US from Asia) at 100 Mph or more. So.. if you are flying towards Asia at 600 Mph INTO a 100 Mph Jet Stream your ground speed is only 500 Mph, whereas if you are flying from Asia to the US at 600 Mph WITH a 100 Mph Jet Stream your ground speed is 700 Mph making the eastward trip quicker. http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/we... Orbus is correct, but the leg of the journey that takes longer depends on the direction you fly. i.e. over the Pacific or Atlantic oceans. |
