My wife and I are young professionals moving to St. Louis. What are good neighborboods to buy a house?

Travel Info
We would like to be close to downtown (for work). We will be starting a family soon. Being close to a park or other good area for running/walking would be a plus.

Travel Tips
It all depends on the neighborhood you want to be in and the amount of money you are willing to spend. There is a renewal going on in the loft district in downtown St. Louis but you are talking about crime at night, expensive lofts, and no decent grocery stores near you.

There is the Central West End (Beautiful homes / somewhat expensive/ shops and restaurants/ again crime at night) around BJC Hospital and Washington University.

There is the Loop located around Delmar (great shops).

Some people like Soulard and Tower Grove but again crime at night is the problem.

All of the aforementioned are located in the city itself.

Now if you want to move to St. Louis County which basically surrounds the city of St. Louis. there are many communities to the South and West that you may like.

South County, Oakville/Mehlville 15-20 minutes from downtown on Highway 55 (great homes and nice areas overlooking the Meramec and Mississippi Rivers)

Southwest County, Fenton Sunset Hills (great homes/expensive)

West County, Ballwin, Manchester and really expensive Chesterfield and Wildwood out Highway 40 Source(s): http://stlouis.missouri.org/cwe/...

Other Travel Tips
Wherever you buy carefully check out the heating and air conditioning systems. I have lived all over the United States and the world and St Louis has the worst winters AND the worst (hottest) summers.
I would recommend Ladue, Clayton, Chesterfield or West County...possibly St. Charles area. These are not really downtown but great places to start a family. I have had many unpleasant visits to some downtown areas and don't go there much. I hope this helps some.

I would go straight out west. Stay away from North County as well as the Soulard area.

If you can afford it, I would recommend Webster Groves. It is close to the city but is a beautiful, old, well-taken-care-of neighborhood in a good area. There are some museums close by. I think you'll fall in love with it if you see it.

You can go further out west to the also-upscale Ladue, Clayton, Maryland Heights. They are all still relatively close to the city, but more suburban. And very close to the highway that goes into the city.
Look at towns along I-64, to the north.

South County's not bad, definitely more affordable, but further away.
