I'm looking for something to do, off the beaten track, in St. Louis? |
Travel Info My husband and I are in our late 20's. Been to STL numerous times. We've done the Arch, the zoo, union station, science center. We're headed to the Cards game Thursday and will be in town til Saturday. We're looking for other suggestions, activies, restuarants, bars, etc. Travel Tips Fairmont Park is ALOT of fun. It is a race track right across the river in IL...maybe 15 minutes from downtown. You don't even have to place a bet (even though it makes the races more interesting) but it is fun to just watch the races and see the horses beforehand (and people watch). The alcohol is dirt cheap, too. You can eat beforehand at Lota-Wata Creek (they have VERY good food). The Chihuly exhibit at Missouri Botanical Gardens is AMAZING (I would suggest going at dusk) and eating at Rigazzi's on "The HIll" right down the street (THE best food...and "fishbowl"...and service...and owner in St. Louis!!). Grant's Farm is also fun if you like seeing animals you don't necessarily get to catch at the zoo (also upclose and personal). On Wednesday's all through August they have the Bluegrass Concert Series (have been to almost every one and they are a lot of fun). Nearby you can eat at Cafe Manhattan...which has very good "diner" style food in a 50's themed restaurant. Also...not too far from St. Louis is Grafton, IL (about 45 minutes). The drive up the Great River Road is beautiful, the town is very quaint and shopping for antiques is fun (The Country Corner Fudge Shop is a must-see). There is Raging Rivers water park and Pere Marquette Lodge (that has a VERY good restaurant). Pere Marquette is on 8000 acres of land and if you don't feel like walking the trails...the drive is just as beautiful. Also, there is Eckert's at the top of the hill in Grafton, IL. You can always find something to do for a day trip there. Another good place to eat...that is a St. Louis tradition is...The Crown Candy Kitchen. They have very good food, not expensive and their chocolate is yummy!! Also...you have been to the zoo but The History Museum and The Art Museum in Forest Park are interesting. I LOVE Forest Park...and could get lost in there for a day without even going to the zoo. You can eat at The Boathouse across from Art Hill...good food, nice atmosphere! Good luck and enjoy!!!! Other Travel Tips you should go to six flags! and the stlouis art mueseum and the science center = fun Well since you are in your late 20's, that means you are old enough to drink (Lucky...). Everyone in St. Louis drinks, thats all we do! Check out Annhesur Busch, take a tour of the brewery for Free, and get some Free beer! Its the biggest brewery in the world! Also, check out Grants Farm. The famous Clydesdale's live there, and guess what... Free admission (Just pay for parking) and Free Beer!!! Six Flags has had a lot of trouble this year. Their best ride, Mr. Freeze, has been down all year. You can find Grants Farm and everything else I stated on the web. If ya get a chance, check out the Italian part of town, also called "The Hill." Its loaded with the best italian restraunts ever. Oh man is it good, lol! Check out this link to get a better idea - http://www.diningstl.com/thehill.htm... If ya need more info, e-mail me. weiss_eric29@hotmail.com St. Louis is really cool. Just make sure you dont get into East St. Louis, or South City... not fun places to be, if ya know what I mean, lol! I hope this helped! If you cross the river into St. Charles, the old Main Street is a great place to shop. There are wineries you can eat in as well. go to the botanical gardens and take in the Chihuly exibit....it is amazing!!! Take a day trip over the Mississippi to Alton and then go north 12 miles to check out Pere Marquette State Park outside of Grafton. The huge log lodge and stone cabins were built by the CCC in the 30's (the Sunday brunch is GREAT!). The town itself is full of interesting nooks and crannies (antiques, wineries, resturants, etc). The Loading Dock bar and grill is right on the water at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers (thier homemade salsa is to die for!). Go up to one of the wineries on top of the bluffs for a view that is like no other. Take a drive along the Great River Road, the bluffs are amazing. Tour the lock and dam at Alton. There is a car ferry at Grafton that takes you across the river where St. Charles, MO is only 15 minutes away. The fall season here is spectacular and this is also where bald eagles winter. (maybe I'll buy you a beer) They have a yahoo group motrails and its about hiking in different areas around St Louis. People just meet together and go hiking sometimes for the day sometimes overnights. Lot of nice people enjoying the Missouri wilderness. |
