What do you mean when you say "hoosier"? |
Travel Info Ok, so I'm from Indiana, and lived in St Louis for the summer, and kept hearing the term "hoosiers" in a derogatory context and I would like to know what you mean by the term. I won't be offended, just want the truth....I've heard that it means a basketball player..then I've heard that it means white trash... Travel Tips It has nothing to do with Indiana. It's kind of a combination of redneck and white trash. Stuck in the 80s, sometimes. Here's what wikipedia says: In some areas, the word hoosier has a different connotation. In the St. Louis area of Missouri and Illinois, a hoosier may be an individual of the Caucasian underclass (like white trash). However, unlike the terms "redneck", "hick", and "hillbilly", most of the time hoosier is used to describe those who are living in a more urban environment. Hoosiers who have moved beyond the usual educational and income criteria yet continue to demonstrate Hoosier behavior are sometimes referred to as Hoogeoisie. That pretty much sums it up. Anyone using it as a derogatory term is like a kindergartener calling you a wee-wee or doody-head. The term "hoosier" in a derogatory sense is purely St. Louisan in nature, and is in no means related to the nickname of those from Indiana. I'm not sure where the St. Louis use of "hoosier" comes from, but it is usually used to denote someone who is "white-trash" or who behaves outside of the norm. You won't hear it used in this way outside of St. Louis, but it is very common there. |
