TRY BARRIE ONTARIO CANADA
VERY NICE PLACE
Elsah, Illinois. It is a historic town with Bed and Breakfasts tuck into the bluff on the great river road. It is about 15 mins northwest of Alton.

For a daytrip, I take my kids to a place called Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee national forest. It is on the Southeastern side of Illinois. It is a rock formation that overlooks a small valley. It is great for ameatur hiking/rock climbing. I have a 10yr old and 7 yr old and they love to go there. (and come on, what 3 yr old does not like climbing). From St. Louis its about a 3hr drive the direct way...4-4.5 using the scenic route. If you are interested, send me a private message and I can tell you how to drive there.
come up to Grafton, IL, good food, antiques, different things happening at different times of the year (the bald eagles are here wintering now...lots of them) Pierre Marquette State Park is awesome, Elsah is 5 miles south with all the old buildings and a great little cafe. Springfield area is great, you have to go to the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, New Salem state park where Abe used to live, his home in Springfield, the old state capitol, there is always something going on at the state fairgrounds. you can always take the train to Chicago. Indianapolis has a great childrens museum (I know the director) and a great zoo. Go down to the Branson, MO area. Mammoth Cave in central Kentucky. Hows that for some ideas?
Kansas City About 250 Miles.

Hannibal or Hermann would be closer Hermann has the Wineries and B & B's.

Steelville if you like Float Streams

Ellington Not Touristy.

Arrow Rock which is between Boonville and Marshall has a theatre and is along the Missouri River.

Eminence down off hwy 19 & 106 State Parks and trout

I have other suggestions if you want....
Graceland in Memphis Tenn. My daughter loved it when i took her(she was almost 3). She is 7 now and still when she hears Elvis on the radio she says "I been to his house". Hope this helps.
Hey- I'm a single dad with full custody and I understand the need for going some place away that won't kill the pocketbook and keep the kids entertained. I would suggest Elsah or Grafton if you were looking for a bed and breakfast and a romantic get away. Branson is quite pricey too. I would suggest going to Lexington, missouri. ( www.historiclexington.com ). If you like historic towns- Go to Hannibal, Missouri- the birth place of Mark Twain. There is the cave to tour and plenty of fun stuff for the kids that isn't to expensive. Another cool place to go to is Daniel Boone's home in Defiance, Missouri. They actually moved historic building to one location ( on the grounds of the Daniel Boone property). Its really cool to visit- check it out here at http://www.geocities.com/athens/partheno...

Here is another place to do some surfing at-http://www.visitmo.com
Click on the regions on the map and do some checking on different historic towns of interest. I love going through Hermann, Missouri and eating lunch there. They are really down hoe and friendly. I go to "Lindlys" Restaurant. The kids like it there because of all of the games they have for kids to play while the food is prepared. (Candyland, Connect4, Etc.). There is a Winery to visit as well and plenty of historic homes and museums to visit. Also- If you like History- Look at visiting St. Joesph, missouri. They have lots of historic places to visit and the kids stay interested.

I hope this helps & Best wishes!
