In the 18th century there was a significant migration from Fujian Province to the island. The big problem came after Chinese Civil War ended in defeat for the Guomintang by the Communist forces. The Guomintang, led by Jiang Kai Shek, fled to Taiwan and set it up as the Republic of China. Bitter enemies looked across the straights of Taiwan for year. The USA pledged to defend Taiwan from China. China wants it back.
