Other Travel Tips The oldest name we know for 陌zmir is the Aeolic Greek 螠蠉峥ハ佄?M媒rrha, corresponding to the later Ionian and Attic 危渭蠉蟻谓畏 Sm媒rn膿, both presumably descendants of a Proto-Greek form *Sm煤rn膩. The Romans took this name over as Smyrna which is the name used in English for the pre-Turkish periods. The name 陌zmir is the Turkish version of the Greek expression 畏 危渭蠉蟻谓畏 "the Smyrna" (Greek uses a definite article for proper names) or perhaps 蔚喂蟼 危渭蠉蟻谓畏 "to Smyrna" (cf. 陌stanbul), both pronounced [izm铆rni]. |
