There are three Amtrak routes into Canada:

1. Seattle, WA - Vancouver, BC
2. Buffalo, NY - Toronto, ON
3. Albany / Schnectady, NY - Montreal, QC

On these routes, there are several intermediate stations, so you may be able to find a boarding station closer to where you are.

In addition to the above options, there are two places in Michigan where you can cross the U.S / Canadian border, although not by rail. Amtrak operates one daily round-trip between Chicago and Port Huron, MI. Take the train to Port Huron, then you can take a short taxi ride into Canada to VIA Rail's Sarnia, ON station. From Sarnia, VIA Rail trains can be boarded for Toronto and all other Canadian VIA Rail destinations in Canada.

Additionally, Amtrak operates several round trips each day between Chicago and the Detriot area. Take the train to Detroit, then take a taxi across the border to Windsor, ON. From here, board a VIA Rail train to Toronto. Once again, at Toronto you can make connections to all VIA Rail Canadian passenger rail destinations.

If you are planning to cross into Canada at either Michigan border crossing, I would highly recommend that you visit both Amtrak and VIA Rail websites and give yourself enough time to cross the border. Amtrak and VIA Rail do not coordinate service in Michigan / Ontario, so it's up to you to make sure you build a trip plan that will allow you enough time to make a cross-border connection.
