What are the best sites to see in the Smithsonian? |
Travel Info I have just 4 hours to visit the Smithsonian. What are the top "must see" buildings or exhibits to see? Travel Tips Depends upon your interests. There is really no "main" Smithsonian museum. In fact many of the museums on the mall are not part of the Smithsonian including the Holocaust Museum, National Archives, and National Gallery of Art. Four hours should be enough for any one museum. I would try to do the National Archives and Air and Space Museum, but here are some more details to help you decide: Air and Space Museum - This is by far the most popular of the museums with everything from the Wright brothers flier to the Apollo mission capsules. Gets very crowded in the summer. If you are a real aviation fan, don't miss the Paul E. Garber flight facility outside of Washington DC where they display larger aircarft like the space shuttle. American History Museum - Americana including star spangled banner, Washington's uniform, etc. Interesting but wouldn't put it above other things. Natural History Museum - lots of stuffed dead animals. Chicago's Field Museum is better. National Gallery of Art - Impressionist paintings and Dutch masters are the highlights here in my opinion. Basement of museum is great for cheap lunch. National Archives - Must see if you are American. Copies of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. For you Brits, a copy of the Magna Carta too. Holocaust Museum - Deeply moving and sobering, but would not do it ahead of other museums. American Indian Museum - haven't been yet. There are even more Museums like the Hirshorn, but unless you have a special interest in one of these, save it for a later visit. But all are great museums.
